These Handblown Glass Furnace Beads are Made in Canada by Virginia Wilson Toccalino and Tony Toccalino using Italian glass working techniques, at their glassblowing studio in Milton, On. First we gather molten glass at 2100 F from the furnace on a blowpipe. Next a layer of imported, colored glass is added, then several layers of clear, molten crystal, to create the size of bead desired. Sometimes pre-made colored glass canes or rods are added to create stripes and spiraling patterns on the beads. A bubble is inserted through the blowpipe into the mass of glass. The glass is then heated and shaped many times until the shape and temperature is just right (according to the glassblower!) At that point this becomes a team event when Tony and Virginia stretch the glass into tubes, much like taffy, to the length and diameters desired. After the glass tubes are annealed they are cut into lengths then sliced into beads. The beads go through a lengthy polishing process, after which they are ready to be strung with .925 Sterling Silver beads into jewelry. It is important to sign our work so many of the necklaces and bracelets have a signature bead (made by Virginia) just before the clasp.

These bracelets are signed by Virginia with her unique signature bead. The signature bead she makes has her initials
assembled in glass made into a glass cane which was pulled down in size. A slice of the rod, also known as a murrini
(now containing her initials, VWT) was taken off the end and picked up on the surface of the color matched lamp worked
bead, which she then strung on the bracelet just before the clasp.

Filigree glass was invented in Murano by glass masters Filippo and Bernardo Serena in 1527, an elaborate process that
was indeed difficult to perform. It would be 10 years before other glassmakers on the Island of Murano would reproduce,
copy or imitate this technique and hundreds of years before this secret would be revealed to the rest of the world.
Filigree Glass, unlike conventional blown glass, was suitable for only the uppermost tables of society as it was not common.
This elaborate form of Filigrana Glass is responsible for the fame of Murano style glass today. Currently, with new design
innovations and increasing levels of workmanship, the patterns able to be embedded in filigree glass appear to be limitless.
Bringing much appreciation and joy to collectors of the beloved Filigree Glass technique.
